Before WWII, the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905, also known as the Eulsa Treaty, was made between Imperial Japan and Korea as an agreement for “protection”. However, Imperial Japan took full control and power of Korea’s foreign affairs and trade. To avoid full Japanese invasion, An Jung Geun, a famous Korean activist, assassinated Itō Hirobumi (Japan’s 1st Prime minister) with the Korean flag in his hand. He was taken as a prisoner and later was executed, but his legacy lives on for being an inspiration to future activists during the Japanese occupation. Today, he is well known for his handprint where he cut his fourth finger (along with other followers) as an indication for their dedication.
